I liked the character, personally.

Bob was great. But I get where the OP's coming from, because his death felt like a cheap trick. The writers went out of their way to make him a lovable dork because they knew they were going to kill him off horribly. That, I don't like so much.

It seems like kind of an unreasonable expectation to have of Stranger Things Season 2, because the show did the same thing twice in season 1. It's clearly something that's in the show's playbook. And it's not like the show is really big on emotional subtlety to start with, you know?

Well, okay. I don't think that being disappointed that a show with a promising first season didn't improve upon a few issues they had is particularly unreasonable. I still enjoyed season two overall, but Bob as the super obvious sacrificial lamb was one of the things I didn't enjoy.

What were they supposed to do with a character they knew they were going to kill? Make him a cardboard cutout? Or a spiteful asshole like Joyce's ex-husband? She and the boys needed something nice in their weird-ass lives. Besides, it was a little thing that made sense - Bob was established as a high school classmate of Joyce's, an IT nerd, and a kindred geek spirit to the kids. Why wouldn't he have been in the AV club?

Maybe don't go the rather lame route of only creating a nice character so you can use his death to wring a big ol' sobfest out of the audience later? Lazy plot devices aren't the ONLY tool a writer has, you know.

He was initially written to be much more unlikable and was probably always going to die though.
