I am starting a my new job Monday. I know my pay rate and a general idea of benefits. What questions are pertinent to ask the first day?


More importantly, what should I wear? I spoke with the HR manager and she says the dress code is very casual. Except for certain events, most people wear jeans, shirts, and sneakers (HR manager says she wears leggings every day). I bought some new tops and jeans to wear. But should I dress up some on my first day?

I'd try to get a sense of the office culture and ask questions about tha tif you need to.

First day you should always go for more business than casual. But if she says the office is casual, go with that, though nice casual for your first day.

I will hopefully look nice in my new clothes. I am a bit worried the orange laces in my shoes might be too loud.

I'd lean dressier than you expect you'll normally wear. Maybe more "fashionable" than "business wear" since that might lean too formal, so long as it's not too diva-ish. Make sure your hair and makeup are great, though, even if you don't plan to go all out (uh, if that's applicable. I just realized idk if you're a girl) You can always tone your look down when you determine what's acceptable, but if everyone is showing up to work looking like they just strolled out of Vogue you don't want to make a bad first impression.

I bought some new clothes today that should fit that description. My hair will be nicely straightened (even if it takes forever) and I will at least wear a bit if make up.

Jeans in a dark wash with no holes/distressing, nice top or blouse (no deep V-necks/off-shoulder, clingy fabrics, nothing too nightclub-y), comfortable but nice shoes. Conservative jewelry (stud earrings or hoops on the smaller side, nothing too big or flashy), nail polish (if you wear it) in nude, clear, or pink. Best to play it safe until you get a better idea of what is acceptable and what isn't.

Sounds good! I know one of their getting desk people has purple hair so they are pretty forgiving.

Congrats on the job!

As for questions, I figure the important things are: parking, bathrooms, breaks (if applicable), and lunch. Where do people what lunch? what do they usually do for lunch? Is there a fridge where you can keep food? etc. Also, if you are not working a set shift, or something, what time do people usually arrive and leave?

What would that achieve? Not snark, a genuine question. It seems more appropriate to try and fit in on day one so you don't look like you've 1) ignored what the HR manager already told you and 2) misjudged the office culture. Wearing nice, neat versions of what everyone else wears for your first day is the best bet, and then take it from there. And do a victory dance for not having to buy a whole formal wardrobe just for work!

The main concern was she said that they do dress up (business casual) when doing meetings or meeting certain people, so I didn't want to be dressed down in case I meet someone important.
