I'm not sure if professional writing is a skill learned in a day, but just having that common sense for what is professional and what isn't clicking in your head is so important. I take applications for entry-level jobs and interns at my job, and so many of them have no idea how to write. When you're applying for a professional job, even just an internship, don't start your e-mail with the greeting "Hey," and for goodness sake, make sure everything is capitalized. Polite greeting, polite body, an ending pleasantry, and your name. I don't care if your writing is stilted and awkward, but seriously.

Also, if you're addressing me specifically, SPELL MY NAME CORRECTLY. It's on our website! Hell, it's on the JOB ADVERTISEMENT. If you can't even get that detail right when it's fed to you like that, how can I trust that you're as detail-oriented as your cover letter claims?

Sure, but we're not talking about learning how to write a business proposal or something. Writing a professional email in the workplace isn't that hard.
