Basic car maintenance. How to change the oil. How to change a tire. How to install the easily-installable parts.

Unfortunately knowing how to change a tire is completely useless if you're not strong enough to get the nuts off.

- Remove the nuts BEFORE jacking the car up. Gravity will provide leverage.

- Use your leg strength on the wrench instead of your arm strength. Strategically position the wrench and stomp on it.

I have danced the funky chicken on that wrench wilth all my weight with no results. I console myself that a firefighter who came along one time didn't seem to have an easy time with it either.

Yeah, but when they put them back on with the pneumatic at an auto shop when you get your tires rotated (and you don't realize it until you try to get them off), those suckers are tight. Like, it literally took me standing my entire weight on the end of the wrench to get them to budge. I'm not sure I could do it now, it's been a long while since I had to change a tire and I've lost a lot of weight since then.

According to our local mechanic, this is standard nowadays, which is why he said not to bother trying to change a flat tire ourselves.

I agree that this is important, and I hope to learn these skills when I acquire a car. That said, I can understand if a lot of people don't know how to do it (live in a major city, didn't grow up with a car, good public transport, etc.)

Yeah, if I owned and drove a car I would consider these important things to know. But I don't own a car, and I'm unlikely to own one any time soon, if ever, so I don't know this stuff and am not too worried about it.

Plus, as mentioned upthread, when a machine puts those nuts back in it's not like having that knowledge will do me any good.
