What's your homemade cocktail/drink list?

(Anonymous) 2017-12-16 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you mix drinks at home? What kinds of cocktails can you make? What liquors and such should one always have on hand?

I want to get better at making my own drinks, because it's a lot more fun to make guests something fancy than just to pop open a wine bottle. I am hosting a holiday party soon, too, so holiday-themed drink ideas would be appreciated!

So far, I have hot cocoa plus Baileys and vodka. Baileys and vodka is also a great combo for an ice cream drink. I also have brandy ingredients for basic mulled wine.

I mostly keep it pretty simple with mixed drinks. I think the classic, simple cocktails are the best In terms of what I keep on hand, it's pretty limited - one clear liquor (usually gin for me), one brown liquor (usually whiskey or brandy), bitters, and vermouth, and then you can grab more specific mixers if you're in the mood for something specific, whether it's a liqueur or lemon or lime juice or what have you. You can also vary things a little with different kinds of bitters (Negroni etc).

One thing that might be nice for a more festive drink is a champagne cocktail like a French 75. very classy.

I only make one mixed drink that I learned when I saw Civil War in theaters. It was called The Winter Soldier. It is 2 parts pineapple juice, 2 parts sprite, 1 part Curacao, 1 part vanilla vodka, 1 part blood orange vodka. All parts delicious. You can change the amount of various things depending on how drunk you want to be.

I generally stick to the alcohol+pop formula for drink mixing. I find you can never go wrong with a good Rum & Cola, Rye & Ginger Ale, and Gin & Sprite (Lemon-Lime pop). Mix to your desired strength and taste preferences.

Otherwise, a Screwdriver is a basic cocktail staple of Vodka & Orange Juice to taste.

For my Liquor Cabinet Staples, I try and have White Rum, Vodka, Gin, Tequila, and Whisky on hand.

A couple of fancier cocktails I like are Peach Potion and Margarita

Peach Potion
1 part Peach Schnapps
1 part triple sec
1 part pineapple juice

But I will admit I make this one with more pineapple juice.

Margarita

Tequila, Orange Liqueur (Cointreau or triple sec depending on your recipe), & Lime Juice. Shake your ingredients together. Garnish the rim of your glass with salt- dip rim of glass in water and then in salt. Some recipes will say this is optional, but salt makes tequila taste sweeter, so it makes the drink more palatable. Pour into your glass and enjoy (and prepare to get blasted because these are strong)

For a seasonal cocktail, I love the Eggnog & Spiced Rum combination. My mom hated Egg Nog until I gave her one.

I find it's good to have the big three in liquors: rum, vodka, and either whiskey or tequila depending on your drink style. Rum or vodka with soda or fruit juice is a very basic cocktail for anyone. If you like things fruity with the objective of making margaritas, tequila. If you like things stronger/darker, whiskey.

This time of year they're pushing Rumchata and it's a great party booze. Drink it on the rocks or mix it with root beer (tastes like root beer floats) or orange soda (creamsicle). Baileys + cocoa or coffee is a good one, you got that. Fireball whiskey is cinnamon-flavored, so it pairs with a lot of things seasonal. Don't pass up Kaluha for coffe-flavored cocktails. For a holiday thing, go more for cream-based drinks (White Russians, etc) or coffee and cocoa. Fruit-juice drinks with rum are more summery in people's minds.

honestly though I'm such a drunk, I drink my rum neat and only buy mixers for parties.

I like to make a bunch of different drinks (I used to be a bartender) but one I'm really into now is a banana sunrise, which is made from banana liqueur, coconut cream, coconut rum, pineapple juice and OJ. I also like hot buttered rums for winter drinks.

Midori sour - 1 part Midori, 2 parts sweet & sour mix

Captain Happy - 1 shot Captain Morgan Parrot Bay rum, fill the glass with cranberry juice. (Or if it's a family party where you're not supposed to be drinking, bring your own personal-size bottle of cranberry juice and a flask of the rum, take a swig of the juice, top with rum, recap, shake, let your family wonder why you're so calm while surrounded by fuckery and Trump voters.)
