I haven't seen the Pokemon anime in a long time and I never expected it to be terribly complex, but if they took away the fact that she was abusive that's ridiculous.

I believe they made it seem more as a mother stuck between work and her kids, and the difficulties relating to that with her kids not understanding, if what I hear from friends who watch it have the right of it. Could be wrong tho.

Huh. If so, I agree with the OP of the post that they took away what made her interesting.

She's also shown to be selfish and self-centered, but yes, they removed the abusive aspect entirely until she gets possessed by space jellyfish, but even that's presented as their doing rather than hers. At least in the game, the toxin just enabled what was already there.

Lillie's hatred of her mother there, flat out saying "Mother, I hate you!", comes off as pushing it rather than the badass moment it was in the game.

I don't really know the context or anything but I would say it's not surprising that a popular cartoon with a young target audience (like, actual young kids, not teens) would avoid being controversial.

The games are for kids too and they didn't have any issues portraying an abusive parent (more than one, at that). So that doesn't really hold water.

Games are a different medium than tv shows and always get away with more. For one, less regulated by parents, and at least separates its demographic by kids old enough to read.

Even so, the show did the whole thing with James's parents and fiancée being abusive pieces of shit and didn't face any backlash for it. And of course the whole thing with Ghetsis and N.
