Nothing to fix. Great movie, sorry your ships don't exist!

nayrt but... what ship was broken in this movie? There were no canon ships besides a one-sided Rose/Finn (one-sided as in, we don't know if he likes her back yet). It seems the field the sea is still open for any number of ships to sail.

That's certainly what I thought. If people are upset about it for shipping reasons I don't see why.

FinnRey have been spamming Rotten Tomatoes with bad reviews because FinnRey wasn't made canon and there was the one sided FinnRose kiss. FinnPoe are mad because it wasn't made canon. LukeMara are mad because it's as close to Jossed as it can get without having Luke actually say "I never fucked Mara Jade"

So while nothing was actually ruled out, canon-wannabe shippers are pissed as hell that they weren't given actual canon proof.

Anon didn't say any ships were torpedoed.

What are you talking about?

Uh...did I watch a different version of TLJ or something?

Apparently, if you think that romance was made explicitly canon. Fanservice for the shippers? Sure. Canon Reylo? Absolutely not.

What is it with Star Wars fans always having to have everything spelled out for them? I'm like 99% sure that their interactions were intentional and not solely "fanservice for the shippers" but okay.

Your shipping goggles are on too tight. There was no canon romance.

Look, if you don't see it, that's fine. But what else are we supposed to take away from TLJ? Every interaction (aside from the first one) between Rey and Kylo is either romantically coded (e.g. the hand touch) and/or erotically coded (e.g. Kylo wiping his mouth to find Rey's rain there). I mean, they literally did the Anakin/Padmé "together you and I can rule the galaxy" scene again. It's obviously not a successful romance, but it is a romance. Just because characters don't say "I love you" to each other doesn't negate that.

NAYRT

Well, to be fair, the first instance is Vader giving the "Join me, and together we can rule the galaxy" spiel to Luke. I think everyone would agree there were no romantic overtones there. This line has been echoed repeatedly through the films, but just because Anakin/Padme were romantic, it doesn't automatically add a romantic context to the line.

Re: petty fan venting

It's not just the line; like I wrote above, it's the entire scene. When Vader makes his offer to Luke in ESB, Luke rejects him right away. He's angry, defiant, and afraid. When Anakin makes his offer to Padmé, she tries to persuade him to give up his plans and run away with her before rejecting him. She's heartbroken and horrified. When Kylo makes his offer to Rey, she begs him not to before rejecting him. She is heartbroken and disappointed.

But if you want to make it all about the "we can rule the galaxy" line, here are the responses:

Luke: I'll never join you!

Padmé: Anakin, you're breaking my heart! You're going down a path I cannot follow!

Rey: Please don't do this, Ben. Please don't go this way.
