Re: Why Do You Ship What You Ship

[personal profile] a_potato 2017-12-20 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
My overarching pattern is that I get attached to a female character and then ship her with someone (or with multiple someones) that she has chemistry and/or an interesting dynamic with. So, 99% of my ships are het or femslash (I had one OT3: Shallan/Adolin/Kaladin. But the most recent Stormlight book has left me shipping no one with anyone. ETA: All right, actually Dalinar/Navani are okay. But it's very low-key shipping, and it's off-type).

"Interesting dynamic" usually means that they work well together; either have or develop mutual respect (this doesn't preclude them having conflicts/arguments); and are on somewhat of an equal playing field. If they're not on an equal playing field, then I strongly, strongly prefer the power imbalance to lean in favor of my beloved female character.

(Examples: Shakarian, Rebelcaptain)

On the other hand, I occasionally go for deeply unhealthy, borderline abusive/co-dependent dynamics, where being together isn't good for either character, but they're still drawn to one another and can't seem to pull away (Lee/Kara kind of got to this point at some points in BSG. "Scar" comes to mind; lots of fandom conflict over that episode).
