Re: Why Do You Ship What You Ship

On a relationship level, I think the first things I look for are either a) a long history together, b) a prickly, challenging dynamic, c) emotionally fraught canon moments together, or d) all of the above. So, long standing friends who aren't scared to argue vehemently with each other, people of opposing personalities forced to work together, people who survive danger together, all that stuff. I'd say the prickly relationship, the element of challenging and needling each other, is probably the strongest for me.

On a much more shallow level, height difference is very much a thing for me. Het, slash or femslash, height difference is a thing. (A very specific example of this, I love the short angry person paired with the aloof noodle beanpole: see Adams/Jefferson, Gimli/Legolas, etc)

More generally I also like physically powerful characters paired with physically fragile ones, which lends well to warrior/scientist or warrior/strategist pairs. When it comes to het, I also have a weirdly specific thing for warrior women and their less robust male loves.

Also, probably stemming from all of the above, any scene where a character shields or protects another injured character, especially if they don't normally like each other much, has a very strong chance of making me ship them.
