Favorite / Recommended Spy Stories

What are you favorite spy stories? Any medium. Do you like more realistic, down-to-earth, paranoid stuff, or more Roger Moore super action stuff?

I love the comedy Spy. Other than that, I only really like the Mission Impossible movies.

Seconding Spy.

I really, really loved Atomic Blonde, but that about cuts it for me. Oh, and the 2005 (?) Get Smart movie.

Anthony Price's Cold War and WW2 thrillers. They're very dated now, of course. But there's always a historical puzzle to solve as well as the present-day suspense story, so you're solving (or not) two puzzles at once, which is very satisfying. My favourite is "Other Paths to Glory" - First World War and 1970's.

I like most action stuff and comedy - more on the fun side than serious spy media, though I did enjoy Night Manager and Berlin Station. Book rec: Mary Stewart's Aurs Above the Ground . Like a lot of her books, it's fun adventure with a strong heroine.

Both

I like over-the-top Bond (Diamonds Are Forever) and the grittier Bond (Skyfall). I like a few of the Mission: Impossible movies and I liked the 90s continuation TV series.

There was also Alias and Covert Affairs, though the later seasons for both sort of lost their way. I also liked Agent Carter and La Femme Nikita (1997 TV series).

I like The Night Manager. I like the first three Bourne films (haven't seen the other two). I like some of the Jack Ryan movies (I'm iffy on The Sum of All Fears and Shadow Recruit). I like Three Days of the Condor and Breach.

I like a good spoof like Top Secret or Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. I like a good action comedy like True Lies, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, or Kingsman: The Secret Service. I did not like Spy, though.

Oooh, yay, someone else who liked the La Femme Nikita television series.

I also liked most of the other stuff you list. The others I mostly haven't seen yet. (Well, except Austin Powers. That one just wasn't for me.)

ayrt

Yeah, I always thought Peta Wilson was pretty amazing in it (I also liked her in League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which was a pretty terrible movie, but in a fun way).

I have watched all three Austin Powers films and I only actually liked the first one.

She was awesome. Most of the actors (including guest stars) were really good, actually, imo, especially considering it wasn't exactly a high budget network show. I watched League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for her as well and enjoyed it well enough for what it was.

I like Archer, even though it's long since departed from its spy roots.

I pretty much just know Bourne. I’ve tried Bond, but I didn’t see the appeal. Oh, and Alpha Protocol was pretty good.

I'm here trying to think of a favorite spy movie/book, but then I realise all the infiltration-related media I like are actually heist stuff, not spy stuff.

Chances are there are some gritty, WWI/II, Mata Hari-esque thing that I like that I'm forgetting.

Heist stuff is good too! I love heist stuff and probably should have included it in the thread. What heist stuff do you like?

DA Howsabout The Italian Job - the original version?

I really like the more realistic stuff - I don't care about realism, it just has a really fun atmosphere of paranoia and stuff. Really love Len Deighton. John LeCarre is OK, I kind of prefer the film adaptations though. It's cool to have spy stories that are mostly schlubby folks sitting in rooms and having interesting conversations. That's cool to me.

For books, I like The Spy Who Came In From The Cold by John le Carre.

For movies I like The Constant Gardener, Casino Royale, and to a lesser extent Quantum Of Solace. And for sheer fun I like Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and The Man From Uncle (2015). I also recall liking Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy, though I can't remember much about it now.

I loved the TV show Alias when I was younger, but I feel like even the good seasons (1 & 2) would have a lot of eyeroll moments if I watched them now. Agent Carter was good, if a tiny bit fluffy for my current taste in TV.

This thread has reminded me that I really need to watch The Night Manager and the Bourne series.

I like historical stuff, especially related to cryptography. One of my favorite books is Kahn's The Codebreakers which had a history of cipher-related skullduggery from Roman times through Diffie, with about a quarter of the book devoted to WWI and WWII.
