I think they were conflating sentience and sapience, which happens.

Yes, it's a bit of a peeve of mine. "Sentience" means having senses and reacting to the world, which all animals do. "Sapience" is a work related to "wisdom" and there is a good reason humans are called "homo sapiens", because we have not definitively worked out if any other species is definitely sapient, not even the seriously intelligent ones.
