As much as I like the show I agree that the Barb storyline was handled badly. I actually liked Barb but I wanted to see her parents more in Season 1.

What did you like about her? She was a nothing character.

She wasn't exciting but she was a loyal friend and kind of a lovable nerd type. (Lovable to me at least.) I guess I knew a lot of people like Barb back in the '80s. Possibly I was one, now that I think about it.

She's the (comparatively) plainer, geekier friend to pretty straight-A kid Nancy that designate-drives for her the more popular crowd. That resonates for a lot of the cinephile-80s-pop-culture-loving audience (aka Stranger Things' viewership)

Barb was Everywoman/Everyman for us.

The character clearly resonated with some people

what's the problem with that

Yeah, I admit to being surprised when I finally got around to watching Stranger Things after seeing all of the hype on the internet and finding out that Barb was basically just a bit character who had next to no screentime. The way the internet was hyping her up, you would think she was one of the main characters.

(Anonymous) 2017-12-23 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Not only that, but she's not even a particularly pleasant bit character. Most of the screentime she does have, she's either whining about Nancy wanting a boyfriend or snickering about Jonathan with Steve and his friends when he's putting up missing kid posters at the school. Who knew the internet wanted a whiny, sanctimonious buzzkill with impaired empathy for a mascot?

Wait, I think I know why the internet's so invested in Barb...

Or you'd think she'd be competent, or likeable, or interesting or a good friend or something. She's got so little screentime that most of the characteristics that the internet has attributed to Barb are just based on how she looks and massive amounts of projection.
