So, kind of like the original Sherlock Holmes stories, then?

I'm not a big fan of the original Sherlock Holmes stories, but they were written in accordance with, and to the standard of, the literary sensibilities and expectations of the time. By modern standards, I would say they're clunky, simplistic, and often far from realistic. But because of when they were written, as well as the format they were written in, I don't think their failings (or their merits) can really be equated to the failings and merits of BBC's modern Sherlock at all.
