I thought it was good fun, but I'm also a very casual Star Wars watcher so I don't have Opinions on how things should be or whatever.

I'm here for the laser-swords and force powers, and the characters are likable enough.

This is so my level. I actually find it kind of weird to talk about my (generally quite positive) opinions of both TFA and TLJ, because I have zero prior emotional investment, and zero preconceived notions of how things "should" go. Which makes me a reasonably easy viewer to please. However, I'm also someone who is impossible to please when it comes to new installments of things I'm obsessively fannish about. So I do genuinely have empathy and understanding for the people who HATE the new movies. Because I'm totally that person in other fandoms, where I'm just like, "This is ALL WRONG IN EVERY WAY!!1!!" (for example, season 10 of The X-Files was hot garbage as far as I'm concerned.)

I mean, if I get the sense that a person dislikes the new movies because "omg how am I supposed to find this story about non-white and non-male characters interesting?!" then I'll judge them for that, but I can also respect that some people are just really, really invested and have spent a lot of time thinking about the story and forming their own ideas of how things are and who characters are and all of that - and if the new movies fly in the face of that, it's bound to be disappointing and hard to accept.

Oh totally man.

My lack of vested interest isn't a 'oh my god guys don't care so much' but more of a 'I can't really have the same discussions as you guys because I'm not 200% into it', but yeah I've got things I watch where I have like srs Opinions man so I really do understand people who were disappointed for actual character and canon reasons, even if I might not share those opinions because I either don't know the greater backstory or I forgot something in the OT(which I haven't seen in over a decade).

People who think it's shit because there's a female lead and it's not just white-dudes running around can sod off, that's never a good reason to hate something.
