I really liked that Rey was not the product of some special Force Lineage, because I always felt the 'breeding a superior race of Force Users is possible' canon was creepy as hell. And kind of eugenics-y.

I really, really like them outright saying that Force sensitivity can manifest in anyone, no matter if you have superior genetics or not. And I really hope they don't screw that up in the third movie and go back to breeding for special powers.

That was really cool.

Oh, oh man, I agree with this. I hope they don't go back on it, because it's great.

I have a bit of spiteful glee that Rey Skywalker just got crushed.

Ha, it wasn't crushed at all. In fact, Kylo was most likely lying and even Rian has said he doesn't know what JJ will do and that she could still be something more.

That and the forced Force Bond with the "futures" they saw? Yeah, Kylo "saw" her parents. Mmm hmm. Right.

People in 1980 said the same thing about Vader being Luke's father.

Just sayin'.

Yep, I remember that. I feel like most people were on board with the Luke Vader reveal, but there was definitely a chunk of people who insisted up to the last minute that Vader was lying.

I'm literally bookmarking this comment so that in a couple of years when the last movie drops and Rey is still not a Skywalker, I can just fill an entire post with laughter.

... Kylo was most likely lying ...

That's not remotely supported by either the script or the performance of that scene. For one thing, when Kylo does lie (to Hux), he's bad at it. For another, that whole plot line has been built around the idea that reinterpreting the truth is more seductive than a lie. Ironically, the Sith tend to be more honest in the Star Wars universe than Jedi. "Darth Vader killed your father" vs. "I am your father."

Claiming Rey as a sister or cousin would be more seductive than crushing her fantasy. It wouldn't work because Rey knows her parents are nobodies, and admits it.

While I don't think he was consciously lying, I also think that it was played and written in a way that made it seem like him not actually telling her the truth but rather echoing her own thoughts and beliefs back at her. At the very least, that's the loophole/backdoor they could fall back on should they decide to give her a different backstory after all in the next movie.
Personally, I don't mind that she's a nobody but I also woudn't put it past them to change it again.

Same. I wouldn't have minded if they'd done the predictable thing everyone was expecting and revealed her as Luke's daughter, but since they didn't, and made a point that her parents were nobodies, my biggest worry for the third movie is that they're going to go "Psych! She's actually a Skywalker after all!" That would be a slap in the face.

Re: Unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
That would suck. It would totally overwrite basically her whole emotional arc from this movie. I mean, the whole point of this movie for Rey was about her being her own person, whose value didn't depend on her parents or her past. I don't know how you just abandon that.

Oh hold on, my biggest worry is that they'll do that by way of revealing that she really did have junker "parents" who sold her but, oh, they weren't her real parents, they were just people who got their hands on her when she was a baby but anyway they don't really count as her parents because she was just adopted and they didn't care about her just like all adoptive parents.

Ever since RotJ, the Skywalker bloodline has been the tumour in the body of the work. I am glad to see that trend bucked a little.

I honestly don’t care if Rey’s not Luke’s kid, but it is kind of sad that when Leia most likely dies in the next movie, the whole Skywalker family will have narrowed down to Kylo Ren, who is more annoying and horrifying than Anakin with way less cause. I guess Padme probably had cousins or something, and who knows about Shmi (I have no idea if I spelled that right. Anakin’s mother?) Outside of that, I like the idea of Rey being born to just regular people, although it would’ve been nice if they could’ve been good, kind people, and not shitbags, for her sake.

But while the films always focused on the Skywalker lineage, they weren't the only ones with Force sensitivity, it could always manifest in anyone. This is most prevalent in the prequels / Clone Wars show, but I guess most ~hardcore fans just ignore those, even if they're canon.

The fact that so much of fandom just focused on the Skywalkers, I too am glad it came out this way. Pay attention to what the prequels said!

Anakin was the son of a nobody and divine intervention apparently.

I think there's an outside possibility for reincarnation, but paternity opens up too many plot holes to work. Then again, we're talking about a franchise where the resistance drops bombs on another ship, IN SPACE.

Using electromagnets so they could drop the payload? Idk. They also make noise which shouldn’t happen, right?

I think it's one of those where it can go either way. The OT does have a line where someone says the emperor knew if Anakin ever had children they'd be strong enough to be a threat. But I've seen people very VERY convinced that The Force is an inherited trait and should be bred for. To the point of arguing that the Jedi were wrong and stupid to keep their own from breeding more Force Sensitive children for their ranks.
