Re: Movie Club Discussion!
(Anonymous) 2017-12-24 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)The movie starts out and Jack's stagnating. Same old thing, year after year. He's bored and stale. And then he stumbles onto another culture and he has no freakin' idea about it because they've been segregated all this time. So at first he tries to study it from afar, dissect it. And he can't figure it out, so he immerses himself in it and fucks up royally.
But Jack's last song really hammers it home.
Well, what the heck, I went and did my best
And, by God, I really tasted something swell
And for a moment, why, I even touched the sky
And at least I left some stories they can tell, I did
And for the first time since I don't remember when
I felt just like my old bony self again
And I, Jack, the Pumpkin King
That's right, I am the Pumpkin King, ha, ha, ha
By being willing to step outside his bubble and explore new cultures and traditions, he's richer for it. Taking is bad, but sharing is good. In short, don't wallow in the same white-bread white American white 'culture' but be willing to embrace those who are different from yourself. Just... try not to fuck it up or take over.
Re: Movie Club Discussion!
In the end he revels in doing what he knows best but I wonder if he tries to celebrate Christmas without taking it over the next year later, off screen.
