There's nothing in "Free!" and Voltron for the matter that would attract such a fanbase.

Yes there are. Hot guys. That's all you need in a show to attract the crazies (I mean, look at non-animated media like "Sherlock" and "Supernatural").

Good point. Just put hot guys on any show and boom! Crazy fanbase. Worked for Doctor Who (9-11th doctors) and any other non-animated shows you've mentioned.
