I could do with an explanation even if I do know both stories. It may have been a few years since I last picked one up, and I’m not always clear on the details.

Same. I don't think it'd be too hard to slip in a bit of context about characters and setting. People familiar with the canon won't mind it if it's done well, and people who are new or need their memories refreshed would probably appreciate it.
