I think they're right. Dr. Who isn't going to around the next corner, and what happens once One Piece is over? It's nice they have something to cling to, but there are better, tangible reasons to live

I think you're looking at it a little too "black and white"-ly.

As stupendous said: "Maybe I'm wrong but I get the feeling that a lot of people say that something pertaining to fandom has saved their life because of the lessons they learned from it, not because of the fandom itself. Though I'm sure some do cling to fandom and I do agree that's unhealthy, I just thought I'd point out that not all of those people have the same attachments."

I think people cling more to values from the fandoms than the actual show/game/whatever itself.
