I mean the Joker has gone from something more joke then scary, female, Robin with a mind control chip, an albino arms dealer...I could probably go on for a long time.

Two of those were elseworlds, so not the same Joker, one was the Silver Age, which is awesome but I'm pretty sure the comic industry has moved past it (and we still have Romero for that, anyway), and Return of the Joker was quite consistent with the character in the DCAU.

I agree that TDK Joker looks terrifying, but I wouldn't call it the essence of what he is. They did capture his scariness and psychoticness extremely well, but there's more to him than that. There are, for example, his comedy props, his silly jokes, and the fact that (when well written) he can actually be quite funny, in a dark sort of way. These are a well-established part of the character, and from what they've shown of TDK, they don't seem to be very emphasized. He looks awesome, I agree, but he seems too much of a straight psychotic killer for me to reconcile with most versions of the Joker.

If there's one version I'd call the essence of what he is, I'd say it's the BTAS version. They did a good job of balancing the clown aspect and the psychotic murderer aspect.

But what I'm saying is those are all "Alternate" jokers, just as THIS is an alternate Joker.

I do see the joking bits in him, just in a much more twisted way than the normal joker (He has most reminded me of Arkham Asylum thus far). Where as usually the Joker is funny UNTIL you realize what's going on, you never have to realize with this joker that he is not fucking around...but I don't think that he's completely lost the humor in a really sick way.

If there's one version I'd call the essence of what he is, I'd say it's the BTAS version. Well no arguments there :3 (My biggest disappointed with this movie is my hopes of a Harley are dwindling greatly)

Indeed. I don't really have a problem with it, I'd just like to get to see a less "alternate" version on the screen one of these days. But again, this is cool, too.

And yes, I agree that this Joker definitely has a sense of humour; it's the "killer stand up comedian" aspect of it that he seems to be missing.

So much word. She may actually have a cameo appearance, from what I've heard, but that can never be enough. :/

Ok, I can respect that. it's the same way the old movie version...like yeah he was awesome, but he was so JACK NICHOLSON you couldn't appreciate the character.

I've heard she's suppose to be the little quirk at the end the same way the joker card was in the last one, but pretty much yeah. And I doubt anything in the third will be Joker centered (For obviouse reasons)

From the review (http://www.rollingstone.com/reviews/movie/16155928/review/21477208/the_dark_knight) I've read on TDK, the Joker will be having the same demented sense of humor going on as you had described. I imagine the trailer deliberately left said parts demonstrating this out partly due to possible spoilers and partly so that the Joker's best moments wouldn't be limited to what was shown in the trailer.
