I usually don't notice the stylistic differences in manhwa, but I haven't read too many of them either. A lot of the stories didn't captivate me, and I tried reading Faerie's Landing and got bored. Usually I don't let styles bother me, because some rather hideous stuff can have a good story and vice-versa. Sometimes both can suck (*coughPrincessAicough*). The Return to Labyrinth comic fooled me at first, and then I bought it and was really disappointed in both the style and the story. I can keep reading a story I enjoy, but I'm starting to get rather selective with manga now because a lot of it just doesn't interest me anymore. A lot of stuff seems very similar nowadays, so it's hard to find one that keeps my attention.

I don't have a problem with them publishing stuff not from Japan. The contests they have for artists is a good thing and lets people get their work out there. But what I do have a problem with is Tokyopop labeling it as "100% authentic manga!", and that's where I go "wut? D:" I guess "manga-inspired" or "manga-esque" doesn't bring in the money like just plain old "manga" does.

Personally, it's the same thing- I don't see a huge difference between MOST manhwa and some manga- I admit sometimes it can get more lanky and angular, but then, cough, CLAMP. XD; I haven't tried Faerie's Landing myself, but it just didn't look interesting to me anyway- I thought Kill Me, Kiss Me was cute, and I loved Ragnarok but never got to finish it. ;; But yeah, I totally am the same- if I like the story, I can ignore or even grow to enjoy the art, but if it doesn't interest me, no measure of beauty in the drawing style will keep me reading it.

Yeah, that weirds me out. On the one hand, manga is the drawing style... on the other, the "100% manga!" label is pretty wtf-worthy. I think we just need a catchier name than "OEL manga" (and less lame than Amerimanga ;D). I mean, there's manga, manhwa, manhua... Maybe if we just called it amanga or amega or something, people wouldn't be so put off one way or the other. XD;

Mostly, I do just think it's... well, if someone's putting effort into it and the story's good, it doesn't suck just because it's not coming outta Japan. Disliking something for the art style or for the characters/story/whathaveyou is one thing, but drawing a line between "originally from Japan" and "originally from America" and saying that everyone on one side of the line sucks etc etc is what makes me >/ at the OP on this one.
