Maybe you could try writing some kind of AU fic that requires a bit of world building, and see how that goes.

Set yourself some narrow rules before you make/find a prompt. It is a very common author's device and that's because it works.

I have the opposite problem from you, OP. I stopped writing fic and started writing original stories. Lately, I've been wanting to write a new fic, but I'm worried about stuff like characterization and canon and dialogue. I've never had that worry before and it's quite odd because it seems like writing a fic should be easier, but it's harder for me.

My friend got me this notebook with three hundred prompts and that really helps when I'm having trouble writing. I also write out character sketches and a rough outline. Hope this helps!

You could expand from what you've been doing.

Like start with an already built world Star Trek, Tolkien, Supernatural, whatever, and think about all the ways your world would be different - what would be better, what would be worse. Figure out how to detail all of those changes to someone who doesn't know a lot about the already built world.

I know I'm a day late, as usual, but try writing something set in the real world if world-building is your issue.

Don't worry, anon! The worldbuilding is tough and such, but do it right and the words will come. Even if it starts as an AU fanfic of something :)
