How about Voltron? Now that was a wild bunch.

Anything huge that's been popular for a long time.

Voltron. No matter what character or ship they like, all fans are awful. They've made me hate the series.

(Doctor Who fandom can be really wanky and toxic. And not just since the reboot, either.)

Based on what I've seen on Tumblr, probably Steven Universe and Voltron. And even though Dream Daddy is a flash in the pan, that fandom got pretty toxic pretty fast.

I’ve heard the Kannagi fandom went apeshit and started burning copies of the manga when it turned out the female lead had an ex-boyfriend and was therefore “used goods.”

Supernatural and Star Wars. The only fandoms I know where the fans have been horrible to the actual people involved. Well, okay, the fringes of the Potter fandom have been rude to Rowling as well. But not to the same level.

TV Tropes claims that Alan Dean Foster once got a “cup of warm vomit” thrown in his face.

Seconding, all because of how the first reaction of far too many people was "what did the artist ship?"

I think I've seen one thing come from Voltron that wasn't completely wanky. Steven Universe is OK, if you stay out of the wank.

I don't know about worst, but I used to get irritated at the way some Harry Potter fans would act shocked that anyone might be meh about HP. I think it stemmed from the fact that HP was a lot of people's intro to fandom, and when you combine the massive size of the fandom with the mainstream popularity of HP and the increasing mainstream acceptance of fandom occurring at the time, the result was some people unable to fathom the idea that not everyone loved their favorite thing as much as they did.

I don't get thet much anymore, and I think those folks have probably branched out into other fandoms and learned that not everything they love will be widely popular.

I had to stop hanging around this one person who was a Harry Potter fan because she started acting batshit crazy claiming to have real magic powers and calling people muggle trash.
