I try to leave positive or encouraging comments on fics that could be better, because that's how people improve, they keep writing. Especially in small fandoms or for less popular pairings, I hope that people will stick around and keep contributing content.

We're all improving no matter where we start. Don't focus on being better than other people to measure worth, focus on doing better in your current writing than in your previous writing.

I do the same thing, and also especially in smaller fandoms/pairings. Unless something is ungrammatical to the point of being illegible or wildly out of character I'll probably leave a positive comment to encourage them to keep writing and improve.

I'm kind of surprised anyone has the time to go track down what people review. Like other posters I was also hoping nobody did that.
