I disagree - what you've said applies to some people, if not most of the people who call themselves asexual, but there are some that actually are totally disinterested in sex.

It's a similar situation to bipolar disorder - everyone and their dog says that they've got bipolar disorder because sometimes they're happy and sometimes they're sad. Sometimes, people aren't interested in sex, and sometimes it's a long period - this does not make you asexual any more than the fact your moods can change on a dime means you have a mental condition.

However, that a load of people stupidly think they have a condition which they may have mild symptoms for, does not negate the existence of said condition. Just that if they're shouting that they have it makes it fucking unlikely that they actually do.

And, as no 'mous statement is complete without a 'and this happened to me...' bit of anecdotal wank - I had no interest in sex until I was in my twenties. I still find a lot of it boring and uninteresting, but I'm just a straight girl with a low sex drive.

I should clarify. I actually don't think everyone is non-asexual, so I suppose I differ from the OP there. However, it's so much rarer than fandom claims.

Actually, I agree a lot with what you've said here. I fully recognize that there are some people who actually fit the definition of asexual. I just think it's absurd how much of fandom drags out the term -- and brags about it, or acts like it makes them special. It doesn't make you any more special than being homosexual or bisexual. Or any more special than being straight!

I don't know Case personally, for example, and no offense, Case! But I really seriously doubt he's asexual, simply because about 90% of fandom that claims to be asexual actually isn't, and a more accurate term would be one of the following: "unsure," "confused," "considering," "uninvolved," "uninterested at the moment," or maybe just, in the vein of personal ads, "single and not looking."

That and the fact that if you're actually asexual, I think you wouldn't feel a compulsion to point it out to everyone all the time. I don't point out my own sexuality on a regular basis, only when it comes up in discussion. I don't go around saying "well, I'm bisexual!" about completely unrelated topics. I don't respond to my guy friends' posts about guy stuff with bisexually-related stuff. But I've seen "asexuals" reply to girls' posts about their period and specifically bring that up. You could just say "I'm a guy," because girls have long accepted that guys find our bleeding icky, but why is being an asexual so important to the fact that you find bleeding icky?

So I think you're actually more spot on with my feelings on the matter than I personally was above. Congrats, anon, and an internet toast to you!

Sounds similar, actually. I was in my first relationship at 19. It was a homosexual relationship, and I wasn't into sex at the time, and even now when it's broken up and I've moved on, I'm still not into sex. I figure I just have a low drive and other priorities at the moment. </anecdote>
