Is something preventing you from walking into the bank and having a teller give you cash?

Not everyone can hit the bank during business hours. That's why ATMs got so popular in the first place.

Not the OP, but most banks will ask you to swipe in your bank debit card before you make any sort of transaction with them. If you don't have it or an account with that bank they'll make you jump through a shit load of hoops or refuse to do any sort of business with you until you have a new card.

Ummm...not that I've ever heard of. I mean, yeah, you have to have an account or pay a fee (there aren't any hoops to go through other than paying the fee and showing them your driver's license/state ID), but you don't have to have your debit card with you or even have one. My bank doesn't do this, and neither have the 3 other banks I've been to with other people (my mom, my boss and a friend, all who use different banks than I do). I've never even heard of this.

Maybe it's different in different countries?

I'm Canadian and yeah, I need to have my debit card on me in order to do any transactions, including with a teller. That's pretty standard, I think.
