But like... it seems to me that transgressiveness is not always a good thing in and of itself, and this seems like a perfect example of how and why that is.

OK, let me put that another way: I think there are certain things about old films that could be described as "transgressive" but that are, nevertheless, bad things that it's good that we've abandoned and that are bad reasons to like those movies.

I don't care how transgressive blackface is.
