Because it's disappointing when an actor you like is in a crappy TV show? A lot of people prefer to see their faves in good roles.

Obviously the OP likes Ian Mckellan. Is it really that difficult to understand that they might not like seeing him in a crappy tv show? It doesn't seem like rocket science to me. At any rate, it's a bit out of left field to bring up the idea that the movies won't be affected when neither the OP nor anyone else even mentioned that possibility.
