I don't think we should judge previous generations to the CURRENT standard.

THe idea that our standards are 'higher' than previous ones is just ludicrous. I mean, have you SEEN Riverdale? Supernatural? OUAT? Popular shows, and fun, but let's face it, not exactly immortal art. Each is a crapfire with poor characterization, clonky exposition, fanservice, you name it.

So, maybe get on a smaller horse.
