Pangolins are so cool and I feel bad that they’re being used as “medicine” the same way some people use rhino horn or tiger penis or whatever. The species native to I think Thailand is becoming so rare that other species from Africa are being smuggled there, and for ~$300 some restaurants will bring a live one out and kill it in front of you so you know you’re not getting a cat. :-(

My local zoo has one, the only survivor of a smuggled shipment of 14 that came through the nearest airport and was confiscated by customs agents. Most of them were already dead and of the 5 still alive when they found them, only two made it to the zoo alive. They weren’t even sure what to feed them; they ended up on a diet that included ground up bugs and Ensure protein shakes. In the wild they eat ants, but no one’s quite sure what else. They’re like walking pine cones and a lot cuter than armadillos. Their babies hitch rides on their backs.
