Ugh, this show. So many problems. By the time I stopped watching, I was really only watching because there were several characters I was attracted to. I wish Lana had been in some other tv shows I could watch instead. My massive crush on her led to watching way too many seasons of this show.

I saw her in pictures and gifsets and was just massively attracted to her, but I couldn't find the motivation to watch past a few episodes.

She's hot to me, and plus villains are very often my thing. So it kept me on the show. Even when she wasn't being evil, there was still something about her, though I always preferred the flashback evil queen scenes.

Unless your friend is weird about people not liking stuff she recommends you can just say that it didn't work for you, he'll say that anyway tbh, but since you don't seem to be enjoying youself I can't see the point in putting yourself through hours of something you'll hate.

I'm with this. There's nothing wrong with not liking something your friend likes.

The show wore out its premise at the end of the first season, then it became an exercise in cramming as many Disney references into the show so that Rumple and Regina could have fresh puppies to kick.

I don't watch this show but how many instances of rape are we talking? A lot? And it's Disney?

A couple that I can think of. One involved mind control, the other involved magically impersonating someone's wife.

The issue really is that the show never deals with them. They are women on men, and the show just sort of forgets about them or doesn't treat them as rape when they clearly were.

One of the creators/writers joked that one rape victim was lucky to be the Evil Queen’s boytoy because she was so hot. The other creator eventually said something about “she also raped him”—she eventually murdered him, but had been raping him for years, and it was never acknowledged by anyone on the show again. She’s a heroine now.

The other rapist killed and impersonated a man’s wife, then she got pregnant by him, then kept the baby after the man was murdered/wiped from existence. And second rapist also kept a man prisoner in a cage in her basement for a year, forced him to have dinner “dates” with her, and set a booby trap that killed his son. She admitted that they never had sex, only “almost.” Which was probably the time that he kissed her as a distraction in an attempt to free himself. At one point after he escaped, he’d ended up in the hospital, and she was taunting him and grinding on him in his hospital bed and he flatlined. ... She’s a heroine now, too.

The rapists are half sisters. The man who second rapist managed to rape was in a relationship with first rapist. The man second rapist almost raped eventually had a brief fling with first rapist. He also slept with their mother after second rapist was born, but before first rapist was conceived. He was, luckily, not first rapist’s father.

... It’s a family show. Not in a “suitable for all ages” way, just in a “the family tree is a thicket,” soap opera way.

What the fuck. And nobody says shit about this in the show? Are the creators/writers women or men? Frank Miller, author of Batman and Daredevil comics, is a well known misogynist and it shows in his stories, but when he left the comic and Daredevil was taken over by a woman, Ann Nocenti, the first thing she did was rape Daredevil by a female villain. It's a mind whammy but it's never openly discussed in the story. But to this day DD fans still say he was cheating on his girlfriend at the time when he was actually getting mind-whammied into it. How is it that the same fandom calls out what happened to Jessica Jones as straight up rape, but Daredevil still is somehow guilty of cheating when he's being controlled into it, too? Would it have been rape if it he didn't have a girlfriend? I don't even understand how is this double standard still happening and I sure don't get how it's happening in a Disney tv show now.

Grimm was pretty shit too? Adalind raped Nick but that gets swept under the carpet in favor of shipping her with Nick.

You shouldn't have to lie to your friend about a dumb TV show. People can have difference of opinions and things they don't talk about. Jeeze.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
That show, yeah, I made it through 2 seasons and that was a half season too much.

But yeah, if I don't like a thing that a friend recs, I just don't bring it up. And if they do, then I just say it didn't grab me and ask for a new rec, maybe something a little more like [thing you like]. Life's too short to waste it choking down shit you hate.

I actually liked the show for the first couple seasons, but I like cheesy stuff. I gave up in season 3 though. Yeah, the show’s track record with rape and consent was ... not good. Got worse after I quit watching. Just tell your friend it wasn’t for you. They’ll most likely get over it.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I know the popular approach in fandom is to just pretend it didn't happen (see: Welcome to Storybrooke podcast) but it just. Keeps. Getting. Worse.

But whom am I to lie, if they made a spin off with Jefferson, Dr. Whale, Ruby, and/or Mulan I'd be in. Thank God for Sebastian Stan's career. It's the only thing saving me from this awful mess.
