As someone who grew up with undiagnosed autism, Young Sheldon really hits home for me. And it gets the drawbacks of being a gifted kid too, something I haven't seen since Malcom in the Middle, another show I love. Secret because just TRY saying that tBBT depicts autism correctly. Sheldon was never meant to be a statement about all autistic people, but an individual.

Haven't TBBT creators gone on record that Sheldon isn't autistic? He's not a statement about autistic people at all.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah that never works. People want their representation [as long as it is genius-level protag who pwns everyone and/or sexy hero figure ofc] and they don't let anything like authorial intent/competence stop them. See : BBC Sherlock.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
But Sheldon's neither: he's a punchline if anything.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
But he always gets away with saying/doing nasty shit to other people. It's the ultimate fantasy, ot just for people with Autism. I've seen many people proudly declare that they're just like a real-life Sheldon.

and that's why I hate tbbt - I know too many people like him irl and I can't stand them. anyone who makes him a role model? I shudder.

" It's the ultimate fantasy, ot just for people with Autism. I've seen many people proudly declare that they're just like a real-life Sheldon"

yeah and there's also plenty of people with autism who hate him. So fuck off with declaring it "the ultimate fantasy"

The "ot" was supposed to be "not", so calm yo tits.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Regardless, he isn't seen as desirable person to be and more often than not is at the butt of the joke. Pretty far cry from a power fantasy if you ask me.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-07 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
And Barney's womanizing is also "the butt of the joke", but that's not how men read it. They see characters like barney and Sheldon as their role models.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, there have been tons of articles about how he's bad autistic/aspie representation

(Anonymous) 2018-01-08 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
He's pretty clearly autistic. Parsons has said that the writers won't say it because they don't want to be dogpiled more than they already are, but he's confirmed it (while he's not a writer, he has produced several episodes and I think directed some as well so he isn't approaching it merely as an actor).

But you can't seriously look at the character and say he isn't autistic. Be reasonable.

That's cool, OP, and I hope you're enjoying the show. I couldn't get into Young Sheldon because the way Meemaw's portrayed doesn't mesh with how Sheldon described her on TBBT.

I can’t get into it because

(Anonymous) 2018-01-07 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I stopped liking TBBT a while ago. I honestly have no idea what they’re trying to do with Young Sheldon. Are they going for a “comedy?” If that’s the case they’re failing horribly. Almost every single one of their “jokes” is awful. Is it supposed to be a slice of live domestic? I can’t bring myself to give a shit about any of the characters.

I'm honestly not sure what they were going for either. I still like TBBT, but the last couple of episodes haven't been great. It's like they don't know what to do with the characters anymore.

I think it's comedy, but they're completely missig what makes Sheldon funny in TBBT. Sheldon is funny, because he's an adult man acting liek a child. A child acting like a child is not funny.

I think you need to hang out with a better grade of child if adult Sheldon is what you think they act like.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-07 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Sheldon in both versions is doing more harm than good for Autistic people. My therapist thinks I am on the spectrum but I refused to be tested because I don't want thought of as someone like him.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-07 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
If it would be beneficial for you, you should get tested. Sometimes it helps to know. I work with people who have autism and none of them act like Sheldon. They don't act like each other either because autism is different for everybody.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-07 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
all the other characters on TBBT are also assholes

please use professional tools to understand yourself and not a terrible sitcom

(Anonymous) 2018-01-08 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
As I said in the secret, he's one character. One individual. And yes, he's accurate insofar as there are in fact people like him. He's a jerk and an asshat but that doesn't make him bad representation.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-08 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You still have autism regardless if you’re tested or not so you’ll just be without treatment. Considering autism partly manifests as social difficulties, you probably come off an asshole or a creep. This is doing you no favors in the long run.
