I think they're hot, and there's nothing very "alpha male" about him to me, or "bitchy" about her.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't find them hot, but I agree on the other things you said. He's really not behaving very much like an alpha male, although he might look a little bit like one. And she wasn't really bitchy, either. She was professional for as long as possible, though.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, he's a ripped Navy vet who rides a motorcycle and trains raptors of which he is literally the alpha... like how much more alpha were you expecting?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
But that's just his job? He's a pretty easygoing guy in private, who goes on dates in shorts and likes tequila and doesn't take himself all that seriously. He doesn't have that typical alpha male persona thing going on that people are usually complainging about on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That's because the internet version of the alpha male is quite specific and has evolved to include connotations of creepiness, being a Nice Guy, PUAs, etc. I figured OP is using "alpha male" in the more romance genre sense, which is not the same.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, I thought OP meant the internet version. *g*

Nice Guys(tm) are not alphas(tm). Nice Guys(tm) are the people who become bitter misogynists because women they like have relationships with alphas(tm). PUA(tm) includes former Nice Guys(tm) who think they need to become alphas(tm).

I hate to break it to you, but Owen isn't an alpha male in the romance genre sense, either. Alpha males as a character set are driven, domineering, and emotionally constipated. If the setting and plot allow for violence, they are generally very violent.

A laid-back guy whose leadership style revolves around bonds of trust and not "I'm the strongest, you listen to me now" is not an alpha male just because he has muscles and rides a motorcycle.

It seems to be the biggest problem people have with the movie.

I must say, I haven't seen the movie, but I caught about 30 seconds of it on TV once, and they seemed very annoying in those moments.

I liked Claire but the romance was just there for me, didn't love it, didn't hate it.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-07 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
This. I wanted to like it, but I just didn't get invested. I did like the psuedo family they and the kids made, though, but it wasn't necessarily a mom-dad-kids feel to me...

(Anonymous) 2018-01-06 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
IA. I didn't loathe the characters, but they didn't really work for me separately so I couldn't get invested in the romance. I felt like they were going for a pretty old-fashioned Indiana Jones + hot chick of the moment vibe that didn't come off well.

I shouldn't like them. They cover some tropes I don't like. But they worked for me, and I do like them. Not sure if I ship or not. But I like their characters.

I don't have a meaning on him other than that he was utterly stereotyped. She on the other hand was so annoyingly incompetent that I rooted for the raptors.

They're both pretty awful, it's true.

Also so is the rest of the movie.

I'm neutral on him and the romance, but I didn't think she was bitchy. She kind of reminds me of one of my work friends: good at her job, focused, efficient... but not so great at dealing with people who don't have the same approach/efficiency/priorities and a bit resentful of having to step outside of her comfort zone. I can't blame Claire for not being that great at stuff that wasn't part of her job or for her sister sending the boys at an inconvenient time.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-07 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that exactly.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-07 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU

I'm pretty neutral about the movie as a whole, but I'm tired of people saying she was a bitch because she was trying to do her job instead of dropping everything for babysitting for her sister, and the obvious subtext of "if you just dated a guy or spent time with kids then you WOULDN'T be such a bitch"

I don't mind their romance, although I'd love if movies didn't feel the need to shoe-horn in a hetero-love story all the time when they're not going to develop it properly. But what annoys me is that I think in the second movie, they're split up again? so not only did we not see their first date, but we don't even see them in a relationship for real, just a really badly timed kiss (RUN FOR YOUR LIVES, DAMN IT). like, why even hook them up then?
