I make a bunch and save them for a rainy day.

I don't wait to post mine, but I do save a lot of them (I delete the deepest, darkest, most embarrassing secrets for fear someone might find them on my computer - when I got rid of a PC, this was actually the main impetus for making sure I'd wrecked the hard drive sufficiently) and like to go back and gloat over them as well. There's a few I'm particularly proud of from a graphics standpoint.

Apropo of little, but it's just dawned on me exactly how much Tolkien stole from Wagner.

I was like "Yay! A Ring Cycle secret", but then I spotted the short-arse. Anyway, I still like the image choice.

Do you think Wagner sucked that from his own tit? Think again.

No, but Wagner's was a re-telling of the myth, with his own liberties taken, sure, but basically it was his re-telling. Where as LotR is, while great, a bit of a smash and grab. "I think I take the magic ring, the dragon with a hord of gold, a bit of the Nibelung's... Lets call 'em dwarfs..."

Like, there is a difference.

And I like LotR, but c'mon, it's a bit of a robbery.

Well... the Nibelungenlied which Wagner (very loosely in part) based his stuff on is from the... 13th century (?) with the mythological basis for that being much older so Wagner really isn't the original source there.

My feeling is that, while it's not a hugely important distinction, there's a difference between a re-telling and a replica with the numbers filed off.

No, that's true but what I meant was that Tolkien, from what is known about him, is more likely to have drawn his "inspiration" from the older, original sources rather than from Wagner's adaptions.

Oh, I see, Yes, possibly. I'm just salty, I want a big budget Ring cycle series of movies.

I imagine Tolkien and Wagner as a couple of squeeing fangirls now.

This seems right.

Just now?

Just now. Never dawned on me until now.

I either post none, or a whole bunch at once. When I make secrets, I like seeing more than one of mine on the same day.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-07 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
This secret is aesthetically pleasing.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-08 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
The illustration is by Justin Gerard- he's got tons of Tolkien art floating around!

(Anonymous) 2018-01-08 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
You're putting text on a picture. It's not exactly fine art.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-08 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed not, it's graphic design. To qualify as fine art it would have to serve no purpose outside of aesthetics, but there's a clear function in presenting the text (which is the real meat of the thing) in a pleasing way.

/pedantic asshole deliberately missing the point

(Anonymous) 2018-01-08 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
This fellow pendant and graphics nerd appreciates your work.

(Anonymous) 2018-01-08 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Did OP say they thought secret-making was fine art?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-08 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
There's no need to be unnecessarily dickish about it. OP never claimed it was a fine art, and they're doing a service for this community by making secrets. More than you are by leaving snobby comments, certainly.
