Re: What series/etc. would make an excellent stage musical?

I have no idea, but that might end up dating a musical more than is really noticeable in a movie. I assume it would disqualify it from winning any awards from music, too, since it wouldn't be original, and it does seem a little strange to have a musical all about music without an original score.

I guess they could always just write original songs but call them mashups. But it wouldn't have the same effect on the audience as hearing a recognizable song... but then again, that's not necessarily a bad thing, it would just require reworking the story a little.

I think Jersey Boys was all or mostly non-original songs, and that still won Tonys. I think it could work, especially since you could even update the songs they perform as-needed.
