three fairly solid Star Wars films in a row, which is something George Lucas never pulled off What now?

They are probably someone who thinks not only the Prequels were bad but also Return of the Jedi. I strongly, strongly disagree. But it is an opinion out there in the fandom.

He directed A New Hope, not Empire or Return.

Then he directed each of the three prequels - and YMMV on the quality of those. Seems like the secret is saying "he made one good movie and three bad ones".

ayrt

Yeah, but it's not like Disney directed three films. Lucas may not have directed all of the original three, but he definitely made them.

He presumably had more creative control over the originals than he does over the sequel trilogy.

I'm firmly in the "anybody but Lucas" camp when it comes to Star Wars. A New Hope was reportedly saved by superlative editing by Marcia Lucas, and brilliant post-production work by some of the greatest talents in the business who managed to pull together what reportedly was an incomprehensible director's cut.

Not OP but presumably they're referring to The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and The Last Jedi. and presumably they also think that Return of the Jedi is bad, which I don't agree with personally but I can see the argument. I mean, the only real problem with ROTJ is the Ewoks, as far as I can tell.

You shut your damn mouth about the Ewoks. I love them.

I would add Han Solo to the problems. Watching ROTJ as an adult, I can really see why Harrison Ford lobbied to have Han killed off. He isn't really given anything to do and is reduced to comic relief.
