I think there's so much good Tolkien-related art (fan art, pro art, I don't know where the boundary is here) because when they read the text people want to SEE Middle Earth. People might not be as desperate to create or find depictions of MR if LotR had been a movie originally rather than a book. That, and the books have been around for decades, so there's been plenty of time for people to create things.
