Yeah, I absolutely hated this. She was an interesting character whenever she actually got to do something (not often) but the show treated her like FBI Barbie. I think a more experienced actor could have done more with the role (or maybe have had the clout to fight David Lynch off) but the problem here is David Lynch, not Chrysta Bell or Agent Preston.

As always, I am leering just as hard as the men and internally thanking David Lynch for being old school af.

Yeah, but you can have attractive characters and show them that way (which he does with his male characters and some of the female characters, and he does at least have both male and female unattractive characters) without having them getting the coffee and being sleazed on by someone supposedly professional.

Old-school has nothing to do with being an objectifying asshole who counts people as subhuman.

Would you prefer the term "vintage" or?

I'm talking about a 1950s-era male chauvinism and pinup/femme fatale aesthetic that has always pervaded Lynch's work and is part of the appeal to many fans. In which case objectification is rather the point, so yeah, it's odd when people complain about it.

This is a great example of why, even though I don’t divide “porn” from “art,” I do think “porn” should be separated from “mainstream.” If you want creepy sexism to get your rocks off, there’s plenty of porn for your tastes. I don’t want to be watching what I think is normal television and find myself in someone’s Magical Realm: http://gunshowcomic.com/471

I've seen this comic like 10 times and I still laugh every time

(Anonymous) 2018-01-10 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'd never imagine "normal television" and "David Lynch" to ever occupy the same headspace for anyone...

Haha, that comic is amazing, thanks for sharing it.

You must be pretty hard up if you're watching David Lynch's work just for the occasional glimpse of ass. Have you heard of this thing called "the internet"? It's, like, FULL of pictures of scantily clad women.
