Really the only similarity to SU is that the characters are personified gems. Houseki no Kuni is post-apocalyptic, there are no humans left, and the gem-people race now dominates the Earth but is hunted by another humanoid race that comes from the Moon. It seems to be about the mystery of the connection between the moon-people and gem-people, and what exactly the moon-people want with them. I like its atmosphere and characters, but as an anime it's an obvious adaptation of a manga that's nowhere near complete, so most of the big questions don't get answered. I liked it enough that I'm going to read the manga if I can manage to find it in any of my bookstores though.
