Because it's getting her brand a lot of publicity. It's making people talk about her franchise. Her demographic is getting older and she has to do something to keep them thinking about her world. A controversial casting is one of the oldest tricks to get a movie press and word of mouth.

It's a fucking Harry Potter movie, it doesn't need word of mouth.

I am extremely dubious of the idea that the Johnny Depp controversy is good for JKR and her brand - there is such a thing as bad publicity. And even if it were good, I certainly don't think it's intentional.

You sweet summer child. Maybe you should take a step away from fandom and realize that Harry Potter isn't what it was and it will never be that big again. It's demographic has grown up. And in the real world lots of people have lost interest or grown up. But adding some controversy or having Jo's constant tweeting is a way to keep it in people's mind.

It's not as big as it used to be but it's still a massive media property. The first Fantastic Beasts movie made $800 million worldwide.

And "adding controversy" to "keep it in peoples' minds" doesn't help, especially when the controversy is as vicious and negative as this is. I really don't think that JKR tweeting in defense of the casting makes the brand any better or increases the box office take. and i don't know where you get the idea from that it does.
