It's like writing a long form summary of a fic. Say someone had the first Harry Potter story in mind, but they didn't want to write a novel, they instead go "imagine if there was a 11 years old boy who found out he's a wizard, imagine if there's a school just for wizards, imagine if he's the savior of the world, imagine if he fights a troll..." etc. I don't know why people start sentences with imagine if, but the whole post will usually be a list of ideas and plot points all starting with that.

I personally think starting sentences with imagine if is stupid, but plot summaries are ok. Not everyone had time to write fic, and not everyone is a writer. Sometimes the ideas aren't even detailed enough to write an actual fic, there's just some neat ideas. And of course, fandom being fandom, there's also some absolutely stupid ideas that get popular, or old cliches getting recycled over and over again. There's still some genuinely interesting ideas in there, small gems that I never would have seen otherwise because most people who share their ideas via list form never intended to turn it into a full fic in the first place.

Had to add but can't edit cause anon lol: there's also really short ones that just go "imagine if Tony Stark is your lover", the end. Or "imagine if Severus Snape fucked Dean Winchester on a table", the end. Now those I can understand getting annoyed over.

I wish fandom had a way for people to post those kinds of things as prompts in hopes of having them expanded into a full fic.

...kink...memes...

(Anonymous) 2018-01-16 07:59 am (UTC)(link)
That only works for, ya know, kink prompts. What about everything else?

(Anonymous) 2018-01-16 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
Most kinkmemes allow and have plenty of gen or non-smut prompts as well and they get filled, too.

Active kink memes don't exist for every fandom.

So start one for yours! it's not that hard.

so "imagine" blogs are basically passive aggressive hopeful prompts from people who are too lazy to write stories and too lazy to start a proper prompting community or exchange of some kind. You just hope some drive-by fic fairy will come by but by god, you're not going to put any effort into it.

I'm pretty sure that's actually what imagines are supposed to be

Ah ha! Thank you!
I have seen something similar, then. And ...wow, they really don't bother me at all. Like you say - not everyone is a writer, or has the time, and i think they're fun, if the ideas are new and interesting.

In fact, i read something similar that actually got me thinking about a fic to write, so.....

I am firmly on the 'they're fun' side. :)

I didn't mind them at first, but you start realizing that they get way more attention on tumblr than fics do, often - because they're short and quicker to read, and can be cranked out quickly. So in my fandoms, at least, I think they're replacing actual fic writing, because people who might have otherwise become actual ficauthors and invested the time in writing out the story, now can just type up an 'imagine', get the validation, and move on.
