I've been sitting on a fix for several months where A goes through some canon problems and gets unexpected help from B. I went to start posting it and saw someone else has a story with the exact same premise.

Do I post or not?

Post. Maybe add an author's note about the similar fic?

I wrote a fic once and like a month later someone posted something nearly identical but commented/linked to my fic that she hadn't even seen it until after she'd already started writing hers so the similarities weren't intentional.

Post it! The exact same premise doesn't mean exact same fic.

Post it, nonny! Lots of stories have a same basic premise, but that doesn't mean they're identical.

I say post it. Even if it's the same basic idea, it's not going to be the exact same fic, and people who like those characters will probably still want to read it, especially if it's a smaller fandom where there's not a ton of choice.

In one of my (small) fandoms, literally every single fic (at least that I've found) for my OTP has the same (weirdly specific, that doesn't fit with canon at all) plot. I've read them all, but I'd still read another with that same story because I love the characters (especially since they're not a popular pairing, so I'll take what I can get).

Trust me, there's no guarantee you'll be overshadowed just because you didn't do it first.

Post it. If it's super duper similar, link to the other fic in your author's note. there's no fandom rule that says there can't be more than one fic about a certain premise.
