Pretty much everyone in the fandom is behind this, and the two women sheriffs are pretty much universally liked. So - yeah. Different now (and not as bad as people want to think it was, then, because only the really vocal asshats got all the attention).

Maybe it will be better and I should give it a chance. I'll see what I hear about it as it gets closer, but I strongly disagree with "and not as bad as people want to think it was, then, because only the really vocal asshats got all the attention". I didn't only pay attention to vocal as shots, and I saw a lot of hate towards female characters. The comments before season 3 when people heard they were introducing two female characters was beyond ridiculous. And it wasn't just how fans treated characters, but how they were portrayed on the show as well in a lot of cases. (If it were just the former, I would just consider watching the show and staying far the fuck away from fandom.)

I know that some characters (like Jo) were disliked by some idiots because 'girl'. But by others because (and the writers admitted this later) she was 'Hunter Barbie Lite' and shoved into the narrative in an effort to romance up a show that was pretty seriously (thank fuck) lacking in that respect.

Yes, a *lot* of loud-ass asshats disliked the poorly written romance crap. But how many loved Ruby, and Meg, and Ellen, and Missouri? A lot. People loved the women characters who made sense in the show, not the ones put out there in low-cut tops to appeal to the hetero boy element. I've seen hate for pretty much every character on the show - but almost nothing but love for Sheriff Jody, for Donna, for Mary Winchester, for Abaddon and Hester and so many others.

I guess you can either decide you won't watch it because of what other people think and say, or you can give it a chance. Either way - up to you. I just know that, so long as we don't get boring romance arcs? I am going to enjoy the fuck out of it.

no one loved ruby (at least until katie left and was replaced by genevive, then everyone was all "where'd the old ruby go" and #notmyruby), missouri was in one episode (unless she was brought back post s4), and no one liked jo or ellen until ruby and bela came and went.

I admit i hated Ruby - she was so *obvious* and just - really Sam? You're taking in by that?? But tons of people debate about Ruby 1 or Ruby 2, which was better, bring back Ruby 1, blah blah.

So what if she was in one episode? She's in the fanfic, so obviously...she was liked and remembered.

I don't remember *anyone* disliking Ellen, and my arguments against early!Jo are already stated. Once they stopped trying to force a romance with her and Dean (zero romantic chemistry there), she became quite well liked.

And Meg, oh Meg. I adore Meg. I cling to the hope that she's not really dead, but, alas....

I'm still a little baffled over the love of Abaddon. She was the most one note recurring character the show has ever had. Instead of being a sexy lamp, she was a sexy hammer. Crush, kill, destroy was all there was to her. I was infinitely more interested in the woman she possessed, Josie. What exactly was the path that lead her to join the Men of Letters? Why did they let her in, with her being a woman and all? How long did she know Henry, was it before or after he was married? I wanted to know and the show never answered those questions. Anyway, a lot of other people liked Abaddon and was all upset when she died which puzzled me greatly because she was a villain but whatever.

I agree with you, tabaqui the SPN audience, or at least the kind I've interacted with are always ready and willing to embrace a female character nowadays especially if she ticks off a minority box or two. As far as I can tell, the only people who still complain about the female characters are the bibro fans, but they complain about every character who is not Sam and Dean, male or female.

Jo was a wasted opportunity. Her actress was in the Israeli army. She could have been way more badass than she was. I'm so glad they never did follow through putting her in a relationship with Dean. Jensen and Alona's chemistry was way too sibling-like. Forcing a romance on them would have been awful. Krikpe is actually really bad at writing romantic relationships or at least he was in Revolution maybe he was better at it now. But I think a lot of lessons were learned from Jo and that has been passed down the line through rotating writing room to who's on staff now.

As for Wayward Daughters, I just hope they don't fuck it up. I was one of the people who wanted this show specifically to be made because it has so much potential. As long as the dreaded Bucklemming stays far, far away I think we're good.

She was fun and sexy and a demon *shrug* - that's a big turn on for some. I liked her well enough, but not as much as Meg. Meg's always going to be my top demon.

I think the crowd I run with stopped complaining about women characters (as in - what is this woman) when Ruby came back. I know Jody Mills was embraced whole-hot pretty much from go, as was Donna, and Jo, too, once, as you say, they stopped trying to appeal to the 18-30 year old male audience (if there even is one) and just let her be a hunter.

*Nobody* on that show seems to know how to write romance; they do great until they get there, and then it all falls apart into CW nonsense.

And lets not forget Kevin Tran's mom! She was kick-ass and fun and heartbreaking.

Yeah, fingers crossed for me, too, they don't fuck it up. Keep away from the boring-ass 'romance' arcs and just give us smart, fun women kicking ass, please!

Meg was a great character and I liked her relationship with Castiel a lot. They could understand each other because they were both soldiers in a war that had long past them by. I like Ruby too, or rather the concept of her more than the execution. Gen did her better, but maybe I think that because I'm really not a big fan of Katie Cassidy. Katie only ever has chemistry with a few actors and Jared was not one of them. Anyway, Gen could pull off the love for Sam and some ambiguity but not all of the shades that would have kept us guessing what side she was on. Plus there was no consistency between performances so they were basically two different characters.

I think the romances on this show have been well written. None of them were meant to be great, forever love. They're either about loneliness or tragedy. For example, Lisa and Dean's relationship made sense, both its development and its conclusion. Erasing their memories was beyond dumb, but the stuff before then all made sense. I understood why they wanted to be together and what drove them apart. Jody and Bobby's very cute and brief relationship really could have been something but he died. I like Cas and Meg's relationship, like I said but it's not an epic romance for the ages. The greatest romantic this show has might not even be a love story and might an accident and that's between Dean and Cas. Great, forever love for Sam and Dean will only happen when the show finally ends and obviously if they're alive at the end.

As for romance for the Wayward girls, it's like anything in writing where it can be badly handled or it can be great. If there's one wish I have for Wayward Daughters, one thing I actively want from this show that will make it different than Supernatural it's that they won't habitually kill of recurring characters. So if one of the girls has a boyfriend (or girlfriend, I'm calling Patience being queer now) he won't be killed off when one of the girls need to be sad about something to move the story forward. We've seen hunter marriages in Supernatural, one of the girls having a long time partner wouldn't be unprecedented or unrealistic.

I never saw anyone love Meg and Ruby was one of the ones that people were vociferously complaining about before she was even introduced. And after, I didn't see much praise of her, especially in the wake of Dean going to hell and getting out. I saw a lot of criticism of her then. Missouri was in one early episode, and she was ridiculously tropey. I can't say for sure, but a lot of the time it felt to me like characters like Missouri and Ellen were "safe" for the audience to like. Especially Missouri, because she was not around at all, and literally her small role was propping up the guys. I didn't see love for Mary Winchester, but as I said, I bowed out in season 5, before she became more than just a victim character motivating the boys. I also haven't seen any love for any of the others you list, but again, that was after I got out of the fandom because I stopped watching the show. Maybe the audience changed. And/Or maybe the female characters were written better.

I hope you and others enjoy it. I am still going to reserve judgment because I have been burned by the show and fandom before and just don't have the desire to get into it again if it will be the same. Life's too short.

I think that says it all - you bowed out, and aren't really part of the fandom anymore, and so don't really know what's going on/has been going on.
