Either alter it enough so it's barely recognizable except as a vague concept, or ask the original writer for permission? I don't always want the "original" work linked to mine so I usually go for the former when I do write something (very rarely lol) inspired by others, but just asking can give a lot of peace of mind. And if they say no, well, at least you have a straight answer.
