Futurama gets Kirk almost, but not quite, almost completely wrong.

Right, but that's not Kirk. It's Shatner. Played by Shatner and doing his Shatner best.

Shatner's whole thing is of playing everything with over-the-top earnestness.

Murray perfected the character of the bullshit artist who could bullshit AND communicate contempt while bullshitting. He did that in at least a half dozen things. Ego is a cosmic version of Peter Venkman without the self-loathing.
