OP, I'd 100% agree with you if this were a thing, but it's not actually a thing.

A lot of people, dare I say most people, place spouses higher in importance above best friends for a variety of reasons, that much is true enough. But I have never in all my life heard someone say "risking your life to save your brother or best friend is sick and twisted, but doing that for your spouse is somehow not."

There are literally masses of Hollywood movies where people die or risk their lives heroically to save friends and comrades-in-arms and siblings and non-romantic family members. People in movies risk their lives heroically to save animals and that's considered heroic. Literally zero people went "boo hoo guys in Saving Private Ryan, how sick and twisted they are for rescuing some guy they're not even having gay sex with en masse!"

What you're talking about is just not a thing.

Dear Spite-Writer who posted their secret last month...

Thank you for inspiring me to complete my own spite-fic.

Twisting a trope that's commonly used to bring my NOTP together, as well as bash my OTP and my favorite character, and making it serve my own ends felt exactly like I was stealing someone else's toys from them.

The selfish, childish satisfaction I got from it was amazing.
