I was going to make the same point. OP is reading the wrong YA series if they're not finding the consequences of war or really any kind of consequences in their YA books.

Eragon is a good example, so is Gone series. Also, The Maze Runner LITERALLY KILLS OFF KIDS JUST TO SEE WHO CAN HELP PROVIDE A CURE TO A VIRUS THAT'S LITERALLY WIPING OUT THE PLANET. There's a lot of bleak consequences that are visible in The Maze Runner series.

Seriously, OP needs to find the good YA series.

And then, there's the sex abuse, violence, and explicit gore of Hunger Games.

Naturally.

I think OP is only reading Harry Potter books. :P

I always thought Harry Potter started middle-grade and not YA.

I'm sorry but hunger games is incredibly sanitized and i really wouldn't hold it up as portraying the consequences of things well

There are Steven King and Peter Straub novels with fewer deaths and less gore than Mockingjay.

I don't know, a lot of these read to me like there's no real reason for the grim things they throw the kids into. It's more plot contrivance to make an excuse for why teenagers are suddenly involved in fighting to the death or whatever.

I mean Eragon is just a pretty mediocre book in general, it's a pastiche of multiple other things, so I wouldn't really cite it.

That's a fair assessment.

I still think OP is judging a whole genre on only Harry Potter books.
