(Anonymous) 2018-01-22 12:54 am (UTC)(link)But I still think that Indiana Jones, the actual character, isn't portrayed in a totally OTT way. He's a smart guy with a lot of determination who survives some crazy shit. He doesn't have superpowers. And: when he's accomplishing all the things that you list, he doesn't do it in a radically over the top way. Rather, he's portrayed as just a guy who happens to be smarter and tougher than average. He gets the shit beat out of him in a lot of fights, he stumbles at times, he gets outwitted, he gets beaten at times, he panics, he fucks up. He manages to win, but it's often absolutely by the skin of his teeth, or by luck, or by his wits or sheer grim determination, rather than by being inherently more gifted than his opponents. He's never invulnerable or unbeatable.
That's what I mean when I say that he's not OTT: the character himself isn't OTT even when his adventures are. And so it doesn't make sense to me to say that the problem with the Alicia Vikander Tomb Raider is that she's vulnerable and not OTT and larger than life, and particularly to do so by invoking Indiana Jones.
