I haven't seen Tudyk in Dollhouse (except in short clips/promos), but I think I still kind of get what you're saying. He seems like a really good actor, but I'm not sure how I feel about his character in Dirk Gently. I like a lot of things about Mr. Priest (and I think Tudyk played him well), but at the same time...he felt OTT in a way that didn't quite gel for me. He didn't feel grounded in anything, I guess. Which is why I think I agree with you about him feeling like he was not a real character per se.

I don't know, I love DGHDA, but imo Max Landis really lacks discipline as a writer/creator. Like, he has a strong sense of vision and passion but imo he lacks the creative discipline to make sure his work holds together and feels grounded. (Also, for the record, I'm aware that Landis himself is very likely a piece of shit; I'm just trying to praise/criticize his work on its own merits.)

You've really nailed how I feel about it - he didn't seem real, like at the end of his working day, he'd get into a van and power down, rather than go home, have dinner and do a crossword or whatever it is someone like him does to relax!

I have no idea what Landis is like, but I've enjoyed Dirk Gently very much. Season 1 was significantly better than the second, in my opinion.

Agreed. S1 was just on the edge of OTT wacky, but IMO it came together really well. But S2 was a mess. I love the core group of characters, and I still wish the show hadn't been cancelled, but if I try to be objective, I gotta admit that S2 was...too much, all over the place, and just kinda bad.

At best, he's a cringey douche. At worst, well, numerous people accused him of emotional and sexual abuse on twitter a few months back, and the popular narrative seems to be that his behavior is a huge open secret in Hollywood.
