The House trilogy wasn't bad, though the Baron and the Emperor Shadam were reduced to 2 dimensional villains. The other books, at least the ones tried to read are unreadable.

The Encyclopedia has a lot of rich resource for background, even if some of it was turned over by canon, i.e Tleilaxu females. But some of it I feel didn't do the characters justice, especially Irulan.

The Encyclopedia was meant to be an in-universe creation, from far in the future of the events it describes. It was meant to have 'mistakes' in it like what you'd have in any book written after events have long since happened.

I will never forgive Brian for de-canonizing the Encyclopedia. Frank accepted it, Brian's just a greedy talentless hack who can't end a story to save his life. /bitter-so-fucking-bitter

My mom gave me the original Dune book to read when I was, hm, probably about 13 or so. After I finished it and we discussed it (it's one of her favorite books), she made me solemnly promise to never read any of the other books. Every now and then, I see them, think about how I enjoyed the first one, and am tempted... but nah.
